The results of Primary Terminal Examination has been published. Amader Pathshala students for the first time of school's short history participated in that exams. So, it was a memorable experience to share. Fifteen students participated in the exams. Among them 9 got first division, 4 second division and 2 failed to pass. The whole school was crying when they got the results for two of their friends failed to pass. One of them has been engaged in a very laborious job where she has to work 10-12 hours a day, she has the language problem as well because she is from a Urdu speaking family and another poor girl came to understand that she can't see the things on blackboard just couple of months ago. So we are very sorry for them those who could not pass. But we can not be very dissatisfied with the result if we take their situation into account and think how little opportunity they get at their home.

The underprivileged children of Amader Pathshala had a day of fun, music, and entertainment with Shironamhin, Krishnakali, Shamogeet, and Leela at the annual festival of the school on December 25. The vividly decorated school, located in Pallabi, wore a festive look, set off by colourfully attired students. The daylong programme included story telling, painting, singing, drama, and announcement of results of annual examinations.

Members of Amader Pathshala Trust; parents of the students, who are mostly rickshaw pullers or garment workers and the people of surrounding areas attended the programme.

The school children started painting in the morning. To encourage them, a prize was handed out to everyone who came up with a painting. “We teach our students the principle of cooperation as opposed to competition. In other words, if you are a student, you need to do your best rather than worry about doing better than the next person,” said Hassan Rubel, the director of Amader Pathshala. “It's really moving to see how the kids feel about each other. A few days ago, I found that a whole band of children were crying because one boy among them did not do well in the exam,” added Ferdous, a senior teacher of the school.

After refreshment was served in the afternoon, the staging of “Pagla Dashu” by students amused the audience.

Popular band Shironamhin rendered some of its most popular numbers after Arup Rahee's band Leela rendered some Lalon songs. Tanzir Tuhin, the vocal of Shironamhin said, “The success of Amader Pathshala is an example and an encouragement to those who care about a better future for the children.” Tuhin added, “It's amazing to see how the community supported school is running without any sponsorship or funding of big corporations. We hope to continue our support for the school in the future.”

Krishnakali and Shamogeet rendered some songs for the children, including some of their familiar numbers. Then, Kabial Ajit Sarkar and Bimal Sarkar, with their group from Dinajpur entertained the audience with a performance of their Pala Gaan. They called on the children to work for a society that does not discriminate against women.

All the artistes called on the audience to pull out the stops to support the school.

Ibrahim always thought education was not for him as his blind father can hardly maintain his family.
But, Amader Pathshala, a school for underprivileged children, has proved his idea false, — like other children of his age, he is now a student of Class I at the school.
‘I can study as this school provides education free of cost. Here with education, I can get some other facilities like meals,’ said Ibrahim.
One hundred and sixty students of Amader Pathshala have the same story.
‘The school was set up to provide quality education for the poor children,’ said Abul Hassan Rubel, headmaster of the school.
‘Normally, the poor children do not have the access to quality education. Either, they go for the madrassah education or to the NGO schools,’ he said on Saturday, when the school provided the students with the annual report cards.
Students of the school rendered songs and staged plays. Famous band music group, Shironamhin, singer Krishnakali Islam and other musical groups also performed.
With the hope to bring a qualitative change in the education for the poor, Hassan and some other youths started Amader Pathshala in January in 2008 in a rented house in Mirpur with 110 students, mostly from the underprivileged group of society.
The school has now 160 students and eight full time teachers. Students can study from nursery class to the Class VI.
Students are taught according to the National curriculum but, Hassan said, they have their own system to teach. ‘The main difference between our system and the general one is that our students do not play a passive role, rather they are lively and active,’ he said.
From the very beginning, the school is run by individual funding. ‘The fund we collect from individuals is not enough to complete all the programmes,’ Hassan said.
‘Most importantly, we need a permanent campus. Without permanent campus, we are not getting government recognition as a school,’ he added.

Annual Festival Celebrated

With all festive mood Amader Pathshala celebrated its annual day. The students took part on a painting festival, their results were published, and they performed music, dance and play. Other than students performance there were music show by Shironamheen, Samogeet, Leela and Quazi Krisnakoli Islam. Students also took part with the guest artists. Kobi Gan by kobial Ajit Sarkar and kobial Nirmol Sarkar gave a different touch and reminded about the necessity of building a society where women share equal rights to men.
Prize of the annual sports was given by chief guest Anu Muhammad, a renowned economist and activist. Hundreds of friends of Pathshala, Parents of the students, local community enjoyed the whole program.

Primary Terminal Examination

The class five students of Amader Pathshala is going to sit for the primary terminal examination tomorrow for the first time in school's history. As we are not only formal result oriented we don't take it like an acid test but this also has some importance. Especially it can be helpful to grow confidence among students and around. With their limited opportunity at home we still hope our students to be competent with so called rich students and bring a good result. Let us hope and wish the best from them.

Independence Day Observed

Students of Amader Pathshala observed the independence day with color and enthusiasm. It was a hot day with lot of people in the small school premise. Students started the day with drawing pictures, then there was music program and some dance by students and at last a small play was performed.
And before ending the program all the students and guests had some sweets to sweeten the day.

Amader Pathshala treads a tough
road to teach poor children

Sonia Akhter, a Class III student at Amader Pathshala, was colouring a drawing of rural vista in the cultural programme of the school on one Saturday.
The daughter of a garment worker, Sonia often helps her mother in the household chores but she is regular in attending her classes from Uttar Kalshi in the Dhaka city’s Mirpur area.
‘I like to come to school and I enjoy my classes,’ she said.
Like Sonia, Mustak, a Class I student, also enjoys his classes and cultural activities at the school.
His shabby clothes, however, expose his poverty. He lives at a slum near the Mirpur Ceramic factory. Mustak’s father is a blind man, and his mother has no permanent work to earn money for her family.
To make education accessible to the destitute children like Sonia and Mustak, Amader Pathshala started its journey in January 2008 with the slogan ‘quality education for underprivileged children in a humanistic way’.
Located at House 40, Lane 25, Block D of Pallabi at Mirpur, the school has now 160 students.
‘We opened the school to make education accessible to the children who cannot afford to have education at the government and non-government educational institutions because of economic or other reasons,’ said Anu Muhammad, a trustee of the school.
Anu, also a professor of economics at Jahangirnagar University, said, ‘The school always tries to make education interesting to the students when the mainstream educational institutions in the country lack this seriously.’
Amader Pathshala aspires to be a replicable model of institution offering quality education for the poor children.
‘But, the school faces serious shortage of fund and efficient teaching staff,’ Anu said, adding, ‘The hurdles can be overcome if people perform their responsibility to society.’
The school enrols students in Class I to Class VII. The classes are held in two shifts in three rooms of the rented house. The school, which is run with individual financing, charges Tk 10 from each student as monthly fee.
It follows the syllabus being exercised at the public schools but in a different teaching method.
‘We have adopted a teaching method ‘survey-question-read-recite-review’ to develop inquisitive mind of students, and to facilitate active participation of the students to understand the texts,’ said Abul Hasan Rubel, head-teacher of Amader Pathshala.
‘Where in most cases students are inert and submissive to the teachers, our students are lively and active,’ he said.
The students also get basic lessons in art and other cultural activities at the school. ‘Here the teachers do not burden the students with home work and the lessons have been prepared with relevance to their own life,’ he said.
The school provides the students with snacks at the tiffin period with a view to providing them with nutrition.
The school recently has launched computer training programmes for the Class VI and VII students, aiming to make the students capable of earning money to support their families and as well as continue their studies.
‘All our programmes require money to be implemented, and we are facing fund crisis,’ said Rubel. ‘The school does not take funds from the NGOs and the donor agencies as they often try to exercise their influence on the institution which takes funds from them,’ he said.
‘We solely depend on individual financing. If we can manage more individual financing consistently, we will be able to push our educational programmes ahead,’ he added.

Pathshala started a new session and many other new things happening

Amader Pathshala has started its new session by annual festival, to say good bye to the old and welcome the new. The results has been published, students are awarded with art materials and books for their performances and 90% of the students has been promoted to the new class. The classes of the new session has already been started and new textbooks has reached to the hands of students except few books as they are unavailable in the market due to government decision not to sell them.
There is a good news regarding student's malnourishment problem. Pathshala has started its school feeding program for all students to solve the problem at least in part.
The computer classes are in its full swing as all the classes has one desktop now and a teacher is appointed.
Students have participated in an art workshop with German volunteer Kathrina to make an elephant, a tiger and a liox( lion+fox). They have made and coloured it nicely.

Annual Exams

Annual exams of students has been started at Amader Pathshala from today. By this Pathshala is going to complete its second session with the participation and support of many people. Pathshala thanks them all on this regard. We hope that they will improve this year than previous one and will continue to improve. Hope for the best.

Art Workshop at School

Students are attending an art workshop at school now. Kathrina, an art teacher from a school in Germany, is conducting the workshop with the kids. They are grouped in three to make Elephant, Lion, and Tiger. The students are so keen to learn that they have even surpassed the language barrier. We hope to bring the things in next year's New Year rally.

The second term exams of Amader Pathshala has been started from yesterday. All the classes from pre-class one to class six is taking part in the exams in two shifts. Whenever exams come teachers of Pathshala recalls the old days of their student life and compare them with that of Amader Pathshala. Things are quite different here. As there is no first, second or third , there is no race. Exams are only to check how students are learning and finding points where to improve. After the exams there will be classes for few days and answer script showing. Then the longest vacation for Ramadan, Eid and Puja will start.

Solar Eclipse observed

The only visible total solar eclipse in this century is observed by students of Amader Pathshala with great enthusiasm. They also learned the causes, impacts and observation methods with the help of their teachers and enjoyed a lot. Many friends also joined the event.

The arrangements are jointly organized by pathshala with Mohakash Barta, a science organization, at Mirpur city protecting dam. The event can be a learning and source of enjoyment to them. Children from other schools also can join the event. Amader Pathshala invites all friends to join and parents of children to have this opportunity for their kids.

After the first term exams and summer vacation classes has been started again. Students are passing busy hours as result publishing of the first term exams, regular classes, and class tests are going on.
The school building is white washed now and students along with their art teacher will paint and color them again. Let's see how they looks afterwords.

First term exams of Amader Pathshala has been over. Now its time to evaluate what students have learned in classes. Teachers marking and taking notes of mistakes they have done in their exam papers. There will be a discussion among teachers and students afterwards so that they can correct the mistakes.
On 9th May there is a meeting with some blog people from somewhere in blog about school's activity and how they can contribute to run the school. All others interested in this regard are also invited. A summer vacation is going to start from 10th May.

The first term exams of Amader Pathshala has been started. After the exams there will be one week of classes and then summer vacation will start. Students are participating in exams without fear as there is no 1st/ 2nd/ 3rd in our school.
Its very hot now in Dhaka and a huge electric failure. So students are eager to have the summer vacation, very unusual of their general attitude about vacations.

New things are happening

Pathshala has started a new session from this January. The number of the students has increased this year up to maximum limit. But we are realizing that we should increase our capacity as many of the parents are very sad and dissatisfied not to enroll their kids. But just now we are helpless about this. Good news is we have been successful to initiate the skill development of students. That will help them in practical life a lot. On this occasion pathshala thanks all friends for their contribution and invite more people to be involved to run the new ventures.

The annual examination is going to start very soon in the school. We don't emphasize only on getting good marks in the exams. But it is a test to examine how kids have learned and it is also test for the school to evaluate our pedagogic approaches. This week Amader Pathshala got additional donations from different people who attended the weeding reception of our friends. From the donations Amader Pathshala has bought a desktop PC and a photocopy machine which includes a printer and scanner in-build. This will help the school to work more smoothly. Furthermore it will help the students in learning how to use a computer since we have now 2 computer in the school.
The the new school uniforms arrived already and the kids love the colorful new dresses. It also has created social acceptance and interest among people about the school. The school would like to invite all friends and interested people to visit the place with all the new developments and we would be happy to get more support for the school to achieve our goal.

Amader Pathshala is now equipped with laboratory facilities. We bought a human skeleton, magnets, a microscope, a magnifying glass, a hydrometer, a compass and some chemicals. Since we have a computer and internet connection at school now, the kids could see the planetary system in the internet today. They really enjoyed it very much and learned a lot.
We will introduce computer classes very soon in our regular curriculum. But first we need to organize at least 2 more computers, so that all classrooms are permanently equipped with a computer.

AMADER PATHSHALA GETS SUPPORT FROM ABROAD

Two of our school's friends just arranged a bigger donation from abroad, which will enable us to considerably improve the overall equipment of Amader Pathshala.

Within the next weeks we will install an Instant Power Supply (IPS) to still have electricity in the classrooms during the daily power cuts. This will have a lasting effect on the learning conditions of the students since the fans in the classrooms will still run during power cuts
For the music classes as well as for cultural activities we can now afford to buy some urgently needed music instruments
To make the lessons more interesting we furthermore will provide a mobile laboratory for the students stored in a box
The donation will also allow us, together with a small financial contribution from the student's parents, to organize school uniforms for all children in our school
The longtime neglected school library will get now a stable book shelf, filled with new books for the students

Even further and regular donations for our daily costs are still needed, this kind of one-time donations are also very much needed and welcome to fulfill our promise, which is to provide quality education in a learning friendly environment to the underprivileged children of our school.

Theatre show in Amader Pathshala

The newly formed theatre group Panchali had a show at amader pathshala on 2nd August. This play is by famous Bengali writer Sukumar Roy where entrance of a crow in king's place creates a lot of difficulties. The students enjoyed the show very much. After the show there was a cricket tournament between school team, theatre team, and spectators team. The theatre team and school team reached the final. In the final school team defeated the visiting team with a huge margin and became champion. Pictures will be added soon to this post!

Today's classes 3, 4 and 5 learned how to make a post on their school's blog. Teachers are also present. And our German intern Esther helped them get to know how it works. We hope the students will know how to make their own blogs within a few days.

Our school proudly presents its materialized prize from the football tournament! With the prize money (25,000 Tk) our school now has natural sunlight shining into our once dark classroom, saving electricity costs is as easy as that, with windows! But there’s more…our school’s wall has transformed into a welcoming entrance, through colourful paintings, which also makes it fun to look at. And because we just can’t get enough of that fun, we’ve planned on painting the classroom walls as well. So we’d like to thank the other teams for playing with us, making all this possible, and hope we can meet up and play again.

Victory in Charity Soccer Tournament

Great news. Our soccer team of Amader Pathshala has won the Charity Soccer Tournament in a very impressive manner and defeated all 5 teams we faced. In the final we beat the expat team (Bagha B) of the Bagha Club in a very tight game after 20 minutes 3:2.

Thanks to our great performance and more to our great supporters from the school we could win the first prize of 25.000 BDT which will be used for the further improvement of our school.

The Last School Day

Like the students in many countries, also the students of Amader Pathshala enjoy their last school day before the summer vacations start.

At their last day at school they had to do the exam in drawing, obviously a lot of fun for them.

After their vacations will be over, they will find new benches and tables for a more comfortable learning environment in their school

The beautiful Stichworks you can see below, were prepared by the parents/mothers of the Students of our School. They are 100% handmade and to produce one picture will need round about one month. The material is silk and the motives are showing the daily life of people, especially women in Bangladesh. The parents/mothers are willing to produce more of these pictures in future to support the school of their children.

In the coming weeks we will offer a catalogue on this blog with different motive/pictures. The prices of the stichworks will depend on the size and quality. In general the prices will be between 1500 and 3000 Taka (15-30€). If requested we can also frame them, what will increase the price around 200-300 Taka (100 taka are around 1 €)
